National Teach-in at USM about Austerity, Debt and Corporate Greed

The University of Southern Maine invites the public to attend a national webinar originating from the Judson Memorial Church in New York City.  “Fight Back USA! Austerity, Debt, Corporate Greed & What YOU Can Do About It,” will by moderated by Frances Fox Piven, professor of political science and sociology at the City University of New York, and Cornel West, professor at Princeton University’s Center for African American Studies and Department of Religion. The live webinar runs from 2-3:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 5, in USM’s Woodbury Campus Center Amphitheater and will be immediately followed by a USM student/faculty discussion that will run until 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

This teach-in is a timely response to the recent historical events in Madison, Wisconsin where hundreds of thousands of citizens protested in the streets and occupied the state capitol for nearly a month in opposition to Governor Scott Walker’s proposed legislation to strip public service employees of their collective bargaining rights. Social justice activists Frances Fox Piven and Cornel West will discuss the increasing concentration of wealth and power in this country.

“Fight Back USA!” is co-sponsored by USM’s Teacher Education Department, the Women and Gender Studies Program and the Honors Program.
