LENNY SHEDLETSKY, professor of communication and media studies, presented “Can We Improve the Quality and Quantity of Online Discussion with Rubrics and Peer Rating?” at the 17^th annual Sloan-C International Conference on Online Learning in Orlando, Fla.  Shedletsky and a former student, ALICE GOODWIN, gave the same presentation, with six studies, at the Second New England Regional Sloan-C Conference on Online Learning in Portland in April 2011.

ANDY SMITH-PETERSEN, system administrator for IT Network Services, had his photo, titled “Portland Stove Foundry,” published in the November 2011 issue of Portland Monthly Magazine, accompanying an article about Portland’s industrial and manufacturing past.

DAVID WAGNER, professor of sociology and social work, had his book, “The Miracle Worker and the Transcendentalist: Annie Sullivan, Franklin Sanborn and the Education of Helen Keller,” published by Paradigm Publishers.  The book will be published in paperback in Spring 2012.

GAIL WARTELL, administrative assistant for professional and continuing education, exhibited her solo mixed media art show, “Inside and Outside,” at Lucid Stage in Portland during the month of December.

JO WILLIAMS, associate professor of sport marketing, BOB HEISER, associate professor of marketing, and SUSAN CHINN, associate professor of management information systems, had their article, “Social Media Posters and Lurkers: The Impact on Team Identification and Game Attendance in Minor League Baseball,” in the Journal of Direct, Data and Digital Marketing Practice (Vol. 13, No. 3, pp. 1-16).

The second annual Wright Express Leadership and Creativity Event Series presentation by Senator George Mitchell, “Understanding the Middle East and Its Significance on the World Stage,” was broadcast on MPBN’s “Speaking in Maine” series.  The lecture took place in USM’s Hannaford Lecture Hall and President Selma Botman joined the Senator on stage during his presentation.

Bitzy Baby, a juvenile safety company in Brunswick and winner of the 2011 USM Student Business Plan Competition, recently patented its first product, the Bitzy Bumper.  Check out the October 22 Bangor Daily News to learn more about the company, the USM students who run it and the newly patented product.

USM President Selma Botman was interviewed on WGME-TV Channel 13 and WMTW-TV Channel 8 for her thoughts on the implications of Moammar Gadhafi’s death. (No links available.)
