David Harris, Janet Whatley Blum, & Matthew Bampton researched the eating habits of Maine high schoolers

DAVID E. HARRIS, professor of nursing, JANET WHATLEY BLUM, associate professor of exercise, health, and sport sciences, and MATTHEW BAMPTON, associate professor of Geography and Anthropology, had their co-authored article, “Location of Food Stores Near Schools Does Not Predict the Weight Status of Maine High School Students,” published in the June 2011 Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior (Vol. 43, No. 4).  The article was chosen as the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior’s featured article in that edition.

Christopher Northrop develops curriculum for juvenile defender center

CHRISTOPHER NORTHROP, clinical professor of law, recently assisted the New England Juvenile Defender Center in developing a curriculum and materials.  He served on the faculty for their Adolescent Development and Juvenile Competence Program, which took place on August12 at the Social Justice Institute in N.H.  Northrop also served on the faculty for the Maine Commission on Indigent Legal Services juvenile defender trainings, one held February 4 in Auburn and the other on May 19 in Bangor.

Dave Owen article chosen for Land Use and Environmental Law Review

DAVE OWEN, associate professor of law, had his article, “Probabilities, Planning Failures, and Environmental Law,” selected for publication in Land Use and Environmental Law Review (Vol. 42).  The Land use and Environmental Law Review is a compilation of the top land use or environmental law articles from the previous year.  The article was originally published in the Tulane Law Review (Vol. 84, p. 265, 2010).

Nancy Richeson presented Scholarly Achievement Award

NANCY RICHESON, associate professor of recreation and leisure studies, received a Scholarly Achievement Award on September 21 at the American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) annual meeting in Indianapolis, Ind.  This award is granted each year to one member of ATRA who has contributed significantly to the professional knowledge in recreational therapy.

Sarah Schindler’s article a Top 10

SARAH SCHINDLER, professor of law, had her article, “Encouraging Private Investment in Energy Efficiency,” published on the Social Science Research Network (SSRN).  Since it was posted, the article has been featured on many of SSRN’s Top 10 lists, including the Environmental Law & Policy E-Journal Top 10; the Agricultural & Natural Resource Economics E-Journal Top 10; Political Economy: Government Expenditures & Related Policies E-Journal Top 10; and the Journal of ERN: Government Expenditures & Welfare 10. On October 6, Schindler presented “Sustainable/Creative/Productive Use of Underused Urban and Suburban Spaces” for USM’s Fall Research Administration Colloquia Series.  She also was selected to participate in the Humane Society’s Shin Pond Summer Retreat Program, Shin Pond, Maine.

Kate Wininger publishes paper; reviews book; presents in Ohio

KATE WININGER, professor of philosophy and women and gender studies, had her paper, “The Slippery Slopes of Pornography,” published in “Sex, Love and Friendship: Studies of the Society for the Philosophy of Sex and Love” (Ed. Adrianne Leigh McEvoy, 2011).  Wininger reviewed “Introducing Philosophy through Film: Key Texts, Discussion, and Film Selections” (Eds. Richard Fumerton and Diane Jeske, 2011).  She presented “African Sustainability: Agriculture as Metaphor and Survival in the Writings of Bessie Head and Wangari Maathai” at the African Literature Associate conference in Athens, Ohio, and participated in seminars at The International Society of African Philosophy and Studies at The Ohio State University in Columbia, Ohio.  While in Ohio, Wininger participated in the fifth independent conference for the Hannah Arendt Circle at John Carroll University in Cleveland.

Jennifer Wriggins presents with Law alumnus Clint Boothby

JENNIFER WRIGGINS, professor of law and associate dean for research, presented with Maine Law alumnus Clint Boothby ’99 on “Interstate and International Issues in Child Custody Jurisdiction” at the Maine State Bar Association’s Family Law Institute on May 7 in Augusta. She was recently interviewed by the blog “Abnormal Use,” a blog specializing in liability litigation.

Wriggins’ article, “Driving, Insurance, Torts, and Changing the ‘Choice Architecture’ of Auto Insurance Pricing,” was published in the Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review (Vol. 44, No. 1, p. 69, 2010).  The article has been posted on the Social Science Research Network (SSRN), and was listed as a Top 10 download on the Insurance Law, Legislation & Policy E-Journal, having been downloaded 41 times.
