USM Students In Free Enterprise Receive First Place at Regional Competition

The University of Southern Maine Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) won first place at the 2011 regional SIFE competition in New York.

More than 30 teams attended the event in New York on April 4.  The competition was broken up into five leagues, with six teams in each league.  USM SIFE was competing against colleges and universities such as the University of Alaska Southeast, St. Francis University and SUNY at Fredonia.

“One Was A Soldier” Discussion and Book Signing at USM Bookstore

The USM Bookstore will host a discussion and book signing with Julia Spencer-Fleming, author of the new novel “One Was A Soldier,” at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26 in the USM Bookstore, Portland.  Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the bookstore that evening.  This event is free and open to the public. USM Senior Awarded 2011 Heart and Soul Award

Cole Leighton

USM senior Cole Leighton was awarded the 2011 Maine Campus Compact Student Heart and Soul Award for his outstanding service on and off campus.

Leighton, sociology major and Women and Gender Studies minor, plans to graduate from USM this spring.  He hopes to work with college students in a campus setting before applying to graduate school for public policy.

School of Music events taking place April 16 & 17

Southern Maine Symphony Spring Show

The Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra, a collection of USM students and community players from the greater Portland area, will perform its spring concert program, featuring Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3, Mozart’s “Paris” Symphony, Bizet’s L’Arlesienne Suite No. 2, and Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer with featured soloist USM artist faculty Margaret Yauger. The SMSO is under the direction of School of Music faculty member Robert Lehmann. The concert will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, at Gorham Middle School, 106 Weeks Road, Gorham. Tickets cost $6 general public, $3 seniors/students/children, and can be purchased at the door. (more…)

Photo Ops of USM Students Participating in Day of Service

USM’s Office of Community Standards and Office of Student Life have planned the university’s second annual Day of Service for Friday, April 15. This daylong event brings student volunteers into the community to help non-profit organizations.  The day begins with breakfast at the Woodbury Campus Center in Portland and ends in Woodbury for a time of reflection and pizza.

Jennifer Wriggins book cited in Maine Law Court

JENNIFER WRIGGINS, professor of Law, had her co-authored book, “The Measure of Injury: Race, Gender, and Tort Law,” cited in a recent Maine Law Court case, Lyman v. Huber, on December 31, 2010. Wriggins and her co-author were interviewed about the book, and it was featured in the Bright Ideas section of the Concurring Opinions blog on January 6.  On January 25, Wriggins spoke at the State-Federal Judicial Conference in Augusta on “The Measure of Injury: Race, Gender, and Tort Law.” Her book, “The Measure of Injury” was reviewed in the Law and Politics Book Review and in the Journal of Law, Culture, and the Humanities. She also presented at Harvard Law School on March 7 on “Including Issues of Gender and Race in the First Year Law Curriculum.”

Sarah Schindler publishes article

SARAH SCHINDLER, associate professor of law, had a summary of her article, “Following Industry’s LEED: Municipal Adoption of Private Green Building Standards,” published in the October 2010 edition of Probate & Property, the magazine of the American Bar Association’s (ABA) section on Real Estate and Probate Law. The same article has recently been accepted for reprinting in the 2011 Zoning and Planning Law Handbook. Schindler presented her draft article, “Reclaiming Abandoned Big Box Stores” (tentative title), at the Association for Law, Property, and Society annual meeting on March 4 at Georgetown University School of Law in Washington D.C.

Martin Rogoff publishes book and book review

MARTIN ROGOFF, professor of law, had his book, “French Constitutional Law: Cases and Materials,” published by Carolina Academic Press (2011). Rogoff published a review of the book “Maritime Boundary Disputes, Settlement Processes, and the Law of the Sea” entitled “An Overview of Existing Maritime Boundary Disputes and Recommendations for the Settlement” in the 2010 Ocean and Coastal Law Journal.
