Two professors from the United Arab Emirates visited the University of Southern Maine November 13-17 as part of a $285,000, three-year grant awarded to USM’s Women and Gender Studies Program from Higher Education for Development. Associate Professor of Arabic Studies Nawar Al-Hassan Golley from the American University of Sharjah (AUS) and Assistant Professor of Sociology Suaad Zayed Ibrahim Al Oraimi from the United Arab Emirates University met with faculty, visited classes and were hosted at a tea in their honor. DIANE GOUT, Muskie research associate, presented “Cultural Identity and Familial Relationships as Protective Factors Against Intimate Partner Violence Among American Indian and Alaska Native Mothers” at the International Family Violence and Child Victimization Research Conferencein Portsmouth, N.H. on July 11-13.

BARBARA HART, Muskie director of law and policy of domestic violence, is the guest editor of the September 2010 edition of Violence Against Women: An International and Interdisciplinary Journal (Vol. 16, No. 9).

DAVID HARTLEY, Muskie research professor, was featured in the July 2010 Modern Healthcare article “Not Such a Pastoral Setting.”

STANLEY MAX, lecturer in mathematics, had his article “The ‘Golden Canon’ of Book-Page Construction: Proving the Proportions Geometrically” published in the September 2010 Journal of Mathematics and the Arts (Vol. 4, No. 3, pp. 137-141).

KAREN MONAHAN, Muskie research associate, co-presented “Barriers and Successes in U-Visas or Immigrant Victims” at the International Family Violence and Child Victimization Research Conference, held in Portsmouth, N.H. on July 11-13.

NANCY RICHESON, professor of recreation and leisure studies, had her co-authored article, “Effects of Reiki on Anxiety, Depression, Pain, and Physiological Factors in Community-Dwelling Older Adults,” published in the July 2010 issue of Research in Gerontological Nursing (Vol. 3, No. 3).  Richeson presented “Reiki: A Healing Art” in Spokane, Washington at the American Therapeutic Recreation Association.

ROBERT SANFORD, professor of environmental science and policy, co-authored the recently published book “Practicing Archaeology: An Introduction to Cultural Resources Archaeology” (AltaMira Press: Lanham, Md. 2010).

J. WILLIAM THOMAS, Muskie visiting professor, co-authored the article “Cost Profiling in Health Care: Should the Focus be on Individual Physicians or Physician Groups,” which appeared in the August 2010 edition of Health Affairs (Vol. 29, No. 8, pp. 1532-1538).

JUDITH TUPPER, managing director of Muskie’s Population Health and Health Policy, gave a presentation at the general session of the National Rural Health Association Quality and Clinical Conference in Portland on June 21-23.  Tupper and CAROLYN GRAY, Muskie research analyst, led a session on assessing and improving patient safety culture at the first annual Patient Safety Academy on August 2.  This event was hosted by the Muskie School, sponsored by the Maine CDC Office of Rural Health and Primary Care, and organized by Tupper, KAREN PEARSON, Muskie information specialist and CHRISTOPHER RICCARDO, Muskie project assistant.
