Grant Brings United Arab Emirates Professors to University of Southern Maine

Associate Professor of Arabic Studies Nawar Al-Hassan Golley from the American University of Sharjah (l) meets USM’s Dean of the College of Communication, Culture & the Arts Lynn Kuzma

Two professors from the United Arab Emirates visited the University of Southern Maine November 13-17 as part of a $285,000, three-year grant awarded to USM’s Women and Gender Studies Program from Higher Education for Development. Associate Professor of Arabic Studies Nawar Al-Hassan Golley from the American University of Sharjah (AUS) and Assistant Professor of Sociology Suaad Zayed Ibrahim Al Oraimi from the United Arab Emirates University met with faculty, visited classes and were hosted at a tea in their honor. Nancy Richeson publishes co-authored article; presents at conference

NANCY RICHESON, professor of recreation and leisure studies, had her co-authored article, “Effects of Reiki on Anxiety, Depression, Pain, and Physiological Factors in Community-Dwelling Older Adults,” published in the July 2010 issue of Research in Gerontological Nursing (Vol. 3, No. 3).  Richeson presented “Reiki: A Healing Art” in Spokane, Washington at the American Therapeutic Recreation Association.

Judith Tupper, Carolyn Gray, and Karen Pearson participate in local conferences

JUDITH TUPPER, managing director of Muskie’s Population Health and Health Policy, gave a presentation at the general session of the National Rural Health Association Quality and Clinical Conference in Portland on June 21-23.  Tupper and CAROLYN GRAY, Muskie research analyst, led a session on assessing and improving patient safety culture at the first annual Patient Safety Academy on August 2.  This event was hosted by the Muskie School, sponsored by the Maine CDC Office of Rural Health and Primary Care, and organized by Tupper, KAREN PEARSON, Muskie information specialist and CHRISTOPHER RICCARDO, Muskie project assistant.
