Travis Wagner Presents at California Resource Recovery Association Conference

TRAVIS WAGNER, associate professor of environmental science, presented “Examining Maine’s Household CFL Recycling Program” on March 19 at the Conference on Developing Sustainable Programs to Manage ‘Special’ Wastes in San Luis Obispo, Calif.  The California Resource Recovery Association sponsored the conference.

Sharoo Wengland, Maha Jaber and Jacquelynn St. Pierre Accepted into Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center Program

Kathleen Wininger Presents Paper in Tuscon

KATHLEEN WININGER, associate professor of philosophy, presented her paper, “Teaching Gender in African Philosophy, Film, and Literature,” at the African Literature Conference 2010 in Tuscon, Ariz. at the University of Arizona on March 14. Wininger will be pursuing her research on colonial representations of women in Namibia this spring (2010).

John Wise, Hong Xie and Students Ryan Duffy, James Wise, Greg Lake, Johnny Wise and Sandra Wise Present at Society of Toxicology Meeting

JOHN WISE, professor and director of Maine Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health, HONG XIE, assistant research professor of applied medical sciences, undergraduate students RYAN DUFFY, JAMES WISE, GREG LAKE, and JOHN WISE JR., and graduate student SANDRA WISE, attended the national meeting of the Society of Toxicology in Salt Lake City, Utah. Xie presented on the carcinogenic effects of depleted uranium.  Ryan Duffy and James Wise presented posters on the toxic effects of lunar dust simulants on human skin cells.  John Wise Jr. presented a poster on the effects of altered gravity on chemical-induced DNA damage.  Sandra Wise presented a poster comparing chromatic toxicity in whale and human cells.

Martin Zanghi, Maggie Vishneau, and Ahmen Cabral Co-author Report on Youth with Disabilitites

MARTIN ZANGHI, director of Youth and Community Engagement, MAGGIE VISHNEAU, policy associate, and AHMEN CABRAL, training specialist, all from Muskie School of Public Service, recently co-authored “Youth with Disabilities: A Maine Workforce Development Review.”  The report provides a summary of observations that emerged from a review of the disability and workforce development literature, as well as from interviews with Maine programs that focus on offering youth with disabilities meaningful work-related training and experiences.

John Coons '10, School of Music

John Coons of Corinna has sung opera, jazz, musical theatre, even the national anthem at Fenway Park. “I can’t even remember the number of concerts I’ve been able to do,” said John, who earned a master’s in music performance. He does, however, remember vividly a weekend when the USM School of Music hosted a high school chorale day. He performed in an opera workshop, led a tenor sectional, and gave a master class. “I realized that can actually can do this as a career. USM has allowed me to be the person that I should be.”

USM Welcomes Students

President Botman greets Dickey-Wood Hall students

Staff members in University of Southern Maine residence halls, located on the Gorham campus, welcomed 1,328 students who moved in Saturday and Sunday, August 28 and 29 with the help of their families and friends. Nearly 500 freshman and transfer students arrived Saturday morning and President Selma Botman visited residence halls greeting students and families.  Upperclassmen moved in Sunday.  See USM’s flickr page to view photographs of students moving in Saturday. USM Professor Speaks at Norwegian Conference About the Care of Persons with Dementia

Practitioners today are struggling with ways to treat patients living with some 70 different kinds of diagnosed forms of dementia without relying on the overuse of medication. USM Professor of Recreation and Leisure Studies Nancy E. Richeson recently returned from the “Best Practices in Dementia Care” conference in Norway’s Stavanger University where she spoke on how animal-assisted and Reiki therapies can be incorporated successfully into the treatment regimes of persons with dementia.
