Kali Lightfoot Leads National Discussion; Publishes Online Article

KALI LIGHTFOOT, executive director, National Resource Center, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, is leading a national online discussion forum on “Learning Science in the Third Age” for the Center for the Advancement of Informal Science Education.  Lightfoot also had a piece published on the American Council on Education Website entitled “The Diversity Dilemma: OLLIs, Outreach, and the Underserved.”  To view the article, visit:

Lois Lupica Presents on Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention

LOIS R. LUPICA, professor and associate dean for faculty development, School of Law, gave a public presentation on February 16 on “The Costs of the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005: Report of the Pilot Study of Consumer Bankruptcy Cases.”  This presentation was sponsored by USM’s School of Law.  Lupica is the principal investigator on the pilot study and the national study, which is sponsored by the American Bankruptcy Institute.

Jeffrey Maine Presents at Howard University School of Law; Co-authors Article

JEFFREY MAINE, professor of law, spoke on “Advising In-House IP Counsel: Intellectual Property Tax Issues” on March 11 at the Seventh Annual IP Law Seminar presented by the Institute of Intellectual Property and Social Justice at Howard University School of Law in Washington D.C.  Maine co-authored the article “Equity and Efficiency in Intellectual Property Taxation” which has been accepted for publication by Brooklyn Law Review and will be the lead article in Vol. 62 (Nov. 2010) of that journal.

Charles Norchi Publishes Article and Presents at Conferences in China, Switzerland and U.S.A.

CHARLES NORCHI, associate professor of law and director of the Marine Law Institute, published the leading article, “When International Law Was Made in Maine: The Gulf of Maine Judgment at Twenty-Five Years,” in the Maine Bar Journal (2010).  In early January 2010, Norchi gave presentations on “Humanitarian Law and History” at Fort Custer, Michigan to the 46th Military Police Command, a U.S. Army Unit that is assuming control of the prisons in Afghanistan.  In March, Norchi presented, “Maritime Boundary Claims in the South China Sea,” at the Recent Developments and Issues in Maritime and Transportation Law: An Asia-Pacific Perspective conference in Hong Kong, China.  Norchi presented “Fixing a Fractured State” in March at the inaugural meeting of the Institute for Law and Development Policy in Geneva, Switzerland.

Dave Owen Publishes in Tulane Law Review

DAVE OWEN, associate professor of law, published an article titled “Probabilities, Planning Failures, and Environmental Law” in the Tulane Law Review (Vol. 84, p. 265, 2009).  Owen’s article “Urbanization, Water Quality, and the Regulated Landscape” has been accepted by the Colorado Law Review and is scheduled for publication later this year.

Alicia Sampson Presented Montclair State University Alumni Recognition Award

ALICIA SAMPSON, VISTA service learning coordinator, Office of Community Service & Civic Engagement, was recently recognized by her alma mater, Montclair State University, for almost two years of service as AmeriCorps VISTA in USM’s office of Community Engagement as well as her involvement with Portland’s arts and music communities. At an event, held on May 16 in Montclair, N.J., Sampson was awarded the Alumni Recognition Award.

Dierdre Smith Published in Cardozo Law Review

DIERDRE M. SMITH, associate professor of law and director of Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic, had her article, “The Disordered and Discredited Plaintiff: Psychiatric Evidence in Civil Litigation,” published in the Cardozo Law Review (Vol. 31, p. 749, 2010).  Smith was on a panel at the Maine State Bar Association annual meeting on January 21 addressing “The Impact of Domestic Abuse on Parental Rights and Responsibilities.”
