USM Loses Special Friend

Dear Colleagues:

As many of you know from media reports, Shep Lee, the noted business leader, philanthropist and university supporter died earlier this week.  Shep was very generous with both his time and resources, and was a very special friend to USM.

Over the years, he served on the Muskie School Board of Visitors; the USM School of Business Advisory Council; the USM Institute for Family-Owned Business Advisory Board; and the University of Maine School of Law’s Board of Visitors.  He also was an early supporter of our Jean Byers Sampson Center for Diversity in Maine, and with his family funded The Shepard Lee Community Hall, in the Muskie School of Public Service.

Shep reached out to me several times during the past two years with offers to help. I found him to be an engaging and caring man who understood firsthand the transformative power of education, and believed in the potential of Maine people. USM, all of higher education and, indeed, the people of Maine have lost a genuine and true friend.

More information on the life of this wonderful man is featured in the Portland Press Herald article and obituary.

Sincerely,

Selma Botman
President

USM Names First Annual Provost Research Fellow

collom2June2010USM Chair and Associate Professor of Sociology Ed Collom of Portland is the recipient of USM’s first annual Provost’s Research Fellowship for the 2010-2011 academic year.  The Fellowship will allow Collom to continue researching community currencies and work on a forthcoming book on time banks. Collom is lead author on this book that will give readers an in-depth case study of three different time banks, including the Hour Exchange Portland time bank.

Time banks allow members to exchange goods and services without the use of cash.  Collom, who researches and has been quoted nationwide in articles about community currencies, feels the time banking model is more sustainable than other types of currencies.  Collom also researches home schooling and workplace democracy – all “bottom-up” initiatives that empower the marginalized.  The final result of Collom’s research will be publication of the book, “ Equal Time, Equal Value: Building Healthier Communities through Time Banking.”

The USM Provost’s Research Fellowship is designed to allow the recipient, who must be a tenured professor, the opportunity to spend time on activities related to research, creative work and scholarly attainment. Chosen through a competitive process, Research Fellows are given release time from teaching one class for two semesters, using the time to proceed with a research project.
