“Care of the Soul” Author Thomas Moore to Speak at USM

The University of Southern Maine Evenings at Abromson series continues with New York Times bestselling author Thomas Moore who will speak at USM’s Abromson Community Education Center, Portland, at 7 p.m., Wednesday, October 15. Moore will discuss “How Can We Find the Meaning and Shape of Our Lives?” and will remain on hand to sign books, which will be available for purchase, after the event. Tickets are $15 public and $10 USM students, employees, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) members. USM Receives Grant to Support New Math and Science Teachers

The University of Southern Maine is pleased to announce a new grant award of $750,000 from the National Science Foundation to assist in the recruitment and support of new mathematics and science teachers. The award includes $600,000 in scholarships and stipends to support students studying to become teachers in math and science. The Robert Noyce project will also offer seminars and professional development support during the beginning years of teaching.

The NSF Robert Noyce Scholarship program awards grants to institutions of higher education to provide scholarships for juniors and seniors who are majoring in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) and stipends for stem professionals seeking to become teachers.

WMPG Fall Begathon Part of 35th Anniversary Celebration

The University of Southern Maine’s WMPG Greater Portland Community Radio is celebrating 35 years on the air during its fall Begathon, planned for Wednesday, October 1 through Tuesday, October 7. The weeklong on-air fundraising campaign raises operations money for the non-commercial radio station, with about one third of its operating budget coming directly from listeners. Pledges can be made during the Begathon by calling 874-3000, or online at www.wmpg.org

USM Professor Available to Decipher Financial Crisis

University of Southern Maine Professor of Economics Susan F. Feiner is available to help explain the current fiscal crisis. Prominent in the field of economics, Feiner can explain how the domino effect in the financial market works, and how the buy out will hurt the state of Maine.

Because of her research into the economics of the New Deal, she can draw parallels with 1929, and can explain what the regulatory issues are.

Feiner is the co-author of the award-winning book “Liberating Economics: Feminist Perspectives on Families, Work and Globalization” (UMichigan, 2004). Feiner has been director of the USM Women’s and Gender Studies program since September 2003.

USM Launches Kate Cheney Chappell Center for Book Arts

In an age where most people buy mass-produced books at chain stores and an increasing number of people shop for their books online to read on Amazon’s Kindle electronic reading device, one would think the days of holding and opening a hand-bound book are over. Except, of course, for a growing contingent of book artists who create works of art as limited edition, hand-printed books or unique handmade volumes. An art form that reaches back to medieval bookbinding and letterpress tradition and forward to installation art and novel constructions, book arts cover a wide spectrum. (more…)
