President Accepts Proposed Remodeling of USM Schools & Colleges

USM President Selma Botman has accepted the proposal to reorganize the university’s eight schools and colleges into a five-college model designed to enhance the educational experience and reduce administrative costs.

Botman will now take the proposal to the USM Faculty Senate at meetings scheduled for Friday, April 2 and Friday, April 16. She then plans to submit a proposal to the University of Maine System Board of Trustees for action at its meeting on May 23 and 24. If approved, the proposal would be implemented during the 2010-2011 academic year.

“After more than a year of talking about how to bring fiscal sustainability, deeper academic distinction, and enhanced student success to USM, I am pleased to embrace the recommendations of the Design Team and its five-college model for restructuring the university,” said Botman in a message to the USM community. “This new organizational superstructure increases opportunities for interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary exchanges and collaboration. It marries the liberal arts and our professional programs, and it supports undergraduate and graduate education throughout the university.”

The Design Team of administrators and faculty submitted the proposal to Botman in March. She took additional community input before presenting the proposal for deliberation by the USM Faculty Senate.
