Record Number to Receive Wise Scholar-Athlete Award at USM

A record 131 University of Southern Maine student-athletes will be honored for their academic excellence during the 2008-2009 academic year when they receive the Department of Athletics’ William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete Award in ceremonies to be held at the Brooks Student Center on November 8.

The new record surpasses the previous mark of 129 recipients set during the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 academic years.  To receive a Wise Scholar-Athlete Award, the student-athlete must meet the following criteria: compile a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average for the fall and spring semesters, be a full-time student both semesters, and they must utilized a season of eligibility as a member of a varsity team or the cheering squad.

Six student-athletes will join a select group of four-time Wise Scholar-Athlete Award recipients.  They include Brandi Alton (Ripley, Maine/Dexter Regional; field hockey), Ben Loss (Wilmette, Ill./Westminster; golf and ice hockey), Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy; baseball), Emily Poliquin (Lisbon Falls, Maine/Lisbon; women’s indoor and outdoor track and field), Colin Reilly(Evergreen, Colo.; soccer), and Kyle Smith (Auburn, Maine; ice hockey).

A total of 23 student-athletes are receiving the award for the third time.  They include Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine; women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track), Andrea Blanchette (Hodgdon, Maine; women’s soccer), Alison Bradley (Auckland, New Zealand; women’s soccer, indoor track, and lacrosse), Caitlin Brown (Camden, Maine/Camden Hills; women’s soccer), Heather Burch (Stetson, Maine/Washington Academy; cheering), Katie Day (Hampden, Maine; women’s indoor and outdoor track), Nick Downing (Winthrop, Maine; men’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field), Jennifer Gagnon (Manchester, N.H./Central; field hockey), Eric Graham (North Berwick, Maine; men’s ice hockey), Nicolette Greene (Freeport, Maine; women’s soccer), Collin Henry (Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens Academy; baseball), and Allison Hill (Cape Elizabeth, Maine; field hockey).

Also Stacey Kent (Northwood, N.H.; women’s basketball), India Lowe (Gloucester, Mass.; field hockey), Matt McGowan (Waterville, Maine; men’s tennis), Rolinda Mitchell (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy; field hockey), Sarah Myrick (Weybridge, Vt./ Middlebury Union; women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track), Nicole Paradis (Skowhegan, Maine; women’s basketball), Justin Richardson (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic; men’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track), David Roberge (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little; golf), David Rowe (Burlington, Mass.; men’s soccer), Jeff Warren (Kensington, N.H./Exeter; wrestling) and Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine; men’s tennis).

There also are 31 recipients receiving their second Wise Award, and 71 first-time winners.  Fifteen student-athletes competed in all three seasons, and an additional 25 competed in two seasons. This year’s Wise Scholar-Athlete Award winners represent 13 states, two Canadian provinces and three other foreign countries.

The award program, which was started in 1987-88, is named to honor William B. Wise, a retired USM administrator and friend of athletics.  Wise, a graduate of the University of Maine, came to USM in 1966 as assistant dean of academic affairs and director of the evening college.  In the ensuing years, he served USM as acting dean of the College of Education, assistant to the vice president for academic affairs, executive assistant to the president, and executive assistant to the vice president for student affairs.
