Comment/Suggestion: “Please make more student involved activities for nursing students”
Reply: Thanks for your suggestion. We would need just a little more information before we could proceed on the suggestion. Are you looking for ANY type of activity or activities that are geared towards or pertain to student nurses? If you’re looking for any kind of campus activities please note that our Student Government Association plans many activities throughout the year. If you’re looking for more nursing specific activities, we would suggest you speak with Elaine Ogrodnick int he USM LAC Nursing Office. She would be able to pass on specific information to the SGA or even the USM LAC Administration to help fill your needs.

Comment/Suggestion: “Cheaper food please”
Reply: Your suggestion has been forwarded to ARAMark, the company that contracts with USM for food services. Their Regional Director has asked our Cafe Manager and his supervisor to look over the menu pricing and try and come up with lower prices or meal deals. Once they get back to us on this we will post their reply here.

Comment/Suggestion: “A recycling bin the student lounge would help”
Reply: Thank you very much for calling this to our attention! Facilities did not realize the bin that was placed in there was missing. They have put one back.

Comment/Suggestion: “Offer more clubs. Find a way to offer a gym or discounted gym membership for USM students. Offer a softball club or some physical group”
Reply: Your suggestion is right in line with others we have received requesting exercise equipment and gym discounts. Student Government and USM is working on updating their discount opportunities for USM LAC students. Stay tuned! As for the softball/other team idea, we will pass along your idea to the Student Government here at USM LAC. They have organized such activities in the past.

Comment/Suggestion: “A gym or give us free membership to someplace”
This is a request and an issue that comes up each semester. The administration as well as student government is working on a solution. While we may not be able to offer a full-sized exercise room on campus, we are working to offer generous discounts at area fitness facilities. When these have been worked-out, they will be announced in the USM LAC weekly information email as well as on our Facebook page and web page.

Comment/Suggestion: “Put a printer in this room (176)
Reply: USM uses a pay-for-print system in order to help defray the printing costs. There would not be anyone in the student lounge (176) to monitor the printing which may be an issue if there were printing problems. We have forwarded your suggestion to the Computing folks here at USM LAC to consider. Thanks!

Comment/Suggestion: “A phone for outside calls would be nice”
Reply: Thanks for your suggestion! There is a “house phone” available for local (non-long distance) calls in the upstairs lounge. This phone may be used for short, outside calls.

Comment/Suggestion: “Room 104 is always cold”
Reply: Thank you for calling this to our attention. We have passed this along to our Director of Facilities. The building is centrally computer-controlled but adjustments are always being made based on problem spots and special needs. Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch with us if this situation doesn’t approve. Thanks!

Comment/Suggestion: “The new student lounge (#176) is awesome except that the light turns off too often. If you are using this room to read you need to keep getting up and creating movement often. Very distracting and a bit annoying. I understand the need to conserve energy; however the timer needs to be adjusted and extended. Thanks!
Reply: Thanks for the comment! We’re glad you are enjoying the new lounge! Your suggestion has been passed along to our facilities manager. The time an be adjusted in the switches and he will see what he can do about getting the time extended for the lounge. Thanks!

Comment/Suggestion: “Clean bathrooms better”.
Reply: The Facilities Manager at USM LAC has been notified about this suggestion. His crew members take pride in the condition and look of our buildings and campus. Please be assured that our restrooms are cleaned on a daily basis, sometimes twice per day depending on traffic. If you ever notice something that needs attention, such as a bathroom needing attention or spills, etc., please feel free to bring this to the attention of any staff member who will alert our maintenance crew immediately. The facilities and grounds of USM LAC campus is the envy of many other campuses and we want to keep it that way! Thank you for letting us know.

Comment/Suggestion: “You need to have tissues! Especially in the winter. I had to borrow some from a librarian”.
Reply: I spoke with the Dean and the Director of USM LAC Facilities about this. There are several place in the building where tissues are available. (Student Success has some in their foyer). Unfortunately, there is no money in the facilities budget to provide tissues at this time. The Director did say that if enough people requested this service they could provide it but they would need to pull another service. If more people would like to have tissues provided please leave your suggestion on the box or email lacweb@usm.maine.edu

Reply: This request has been passed on to the department liaison for Humanities at USM LAC Dr. Barry Rodrigue. Hopefully we will be able to offer this class in the near future.

Comment/Suggestion: “Somehow having a shuttle for Portland/Gorham. Maybe having an annual charge for it?”
Reply: Establishing shuttle service between all three campuses is something the Dean is looking into. This may not be able to happen right away but is something we may offer in the future. As there is more demand for something like this it may eventually become a reality! Thanks for your comment!

Comment/Suggestion: “Don’t waste our money on things like this television above the suggestion box. It is serving no purpose. Spend our money on things that will enrich our experience at the school”.
Reply: Thanks for your note. The funds used for the monitor on the south wall (mentioned above) and two others (which are on order and will be in place soon) were not purchased with tuition dollars. Instead they were purchased using project funds or capital/building monies.
The intention of these information monitors is to provide up-to-date and important information to the campus. Eventually postings announcing campus activities, new and exciting class offerings and even last minute information will be posted to these monitors. Not only will these monitors help to keep the campus community informed but they will also help to save on resources. It will no longer be as necessary to waste paper by posting fliers throughout the building and clutter bulletin boards and mirrors in the bathrooms. These monitors are also very energy efficient and will be programmed to turn off after the building closes.
So, not only are these monitors not using tuition money to function but they hope to save money in the long run. There have been some technical problems getting them installed but USM LAC hopes to have these fixed by the start of the spring semester. Student groups are encouraged to submit information for their upcoming events so that this information can be posted both on the weekly update that is published and emailed as well as being included on the postings on the new information monitors. Please submit postings at http://usm.maine.edu/lac/infolist/submit/
Thanks for your submission!
